Hi Alex,
there's software on the market today, specializing in stacking/combining photos.
Not only can stacking
- expand DOF
- and as already know so well increase dynamic range, but also
- increase resolution dramatically
- reduce noise without losing details
- correct chromatic aberrations and handshake as well
It's a very time-consuming work flow and the processing of 30+ images in the software using RAW is not trivial. But if you have that one killer-shot..or rather, 30+ killer shots - the software can do marvels with it.
Being a bit of an IT nerd myself, I laid my hands on
http://photoacute.com/
In actuality, I've only used it for experimentation. If I one day want to do a super-sized printout..say 6 feet wide..it's nice to have it, because I can generate super sharp 300DPI images that big from my D40.
Saves about 20.000$ for that once-in-a-lifetime print because I don't have to buy a Hasselblad..lol.
But so far, my 18X12 inch prints with 6MP looks good enough that I have no practical use for this. On a monitor - even a 30 inch - the resolution is less than 6MP anyway, so you can't really see it unless you print biiiig.
Unless you're a photo-guru, you can't really "plan" that killer-shot that you want plastered all over your living room wall, which means you have to take multiple shots of EVERY shot you make, just in case...and life's a little too short for that..lol.
Cheers
