this is my first time to own a DSLR canon 450D.

is it possible to take images of people againts the light without using the built-in flash? what should i do?

pls advice. thanks

Using a flash is the only way unless you don't mind overexposing the background.

It depends on how much light. There is a well known (yet I don't know his name) photoragpher here in England that specializes in backlit portrates with no flash and they look amazing. One of my coworkers took a class for him and her photos from the class has so much warmth. She said he told them to set their F Stop at 2.8 and leave it there all day. The only light he used was a 2" X 3" board hinged in the middle and painter whight to reflect light. She showed me some photos thay took in a dark barn that looked like it was taken in a studio.

In compact cameras (and digital video cameras) theres a choice to take photos against light, my FZ18 have that choice, and ive tried it in a video camera. It really makes a difference, but im not shure that DSLRs have that choice
