I've been asked to photograph a friend's art exhibition next month and one shot I'd like to achieve is by using a slow shutter speed to blur people's movement within the space.

I presume I'll need to buy an ND filter for this as it's a daytime tungsten-lit indoor shot. I've never tried this before so would appreciate any advice on the best way to go about it. I'll be using my Canon 40D and yes I do have a tripod. Thanks.

If you're shooting under tungsten lights indoors, simply shifting to a low ISO and stopping your lens down will achieve the same effect. Unless you're dealing with spotlights, indoor lighting can be easily turned into long-exposure compositions Of course, if you're looking for shallow depth of field with those long exposures, 3-stop or greater ND filters would definitely be recommended.

I do long exposure indoor shots all the time without an ND filter. Indoors is really really dark when compared to outdoors, even if it "looks" the same. Your eye compensates. f/8 at ISO100 should give you the slight blur effect you're looking for. I look forward to seeing the result!

Both replies have been really helpful in demystifying the the process for me. Hopefully I shall have some good results to show off in a few weeks time. I'll have a little practice in the meantime too to try to simulate the likely conditions.
