I have never touched a dSLR, but thanks to this website I have FINALLY invested in a dSLR. I got a canon rebel xs and so far with the kit lens although I'm negotiating with someone on craigslist to get a dedicated 55mm f1.8 and I think another lens too that is quite affordable. But here is one of my first shots right out of the box experimenting with a blurred background.



And I don't know how I got so lucky and got this one of the sunset with my son. I had to use the flash which made him look pretty bright, but overall I am very excited to get started.




So my question for the group here is I am not rich by any means and am on a budget, what are some of the key accessories I need to immediately get. I am thinking more memory, a spare battery?, and definitely a filter of some kind to protect the lens. But anything else that I am not thinking of?

1. Get a UV filter for your lens ASAP.

2. A spare memory card or two won't hurt.

3. A spare battery wouldn't hurt either.

4. Invest in a cleaning kit for your DSLR. Keep your lenses and the body clean. (DO NOT blow air into your viewfinder) (use a vacuum with a 'keyboard cleaning' attachment brush.)

I made the mistake of blowing air into my viewfinder... now i got dust behind the plastic viewfinder and between the glass prism. D:
