As before, Orsan Kart now has until the end of the month to name the theme for January's Assignment, plus any conditions like allowing post processing, montages etc. Orsan, please let us know your theme and rules in the November 2008 comments thread by midnight GMT on 31st December- preferrably a bit earlier so we can get our thinking caps on, and also so you can go out and enjoy Hogmanay!

Hello everyone, welcome to November’s Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Cold", as suggested by Photoj who won the September 2008 competition. In Photoj’s own words:

"Present an image that represents this subject, be it something tangible or abstract. As we're dealing with digital photography, we'll embrace post-processing and have no limits in that area. Good luck, and have fun."

So there you have it, the theme for November is "Cold", and as always the image you submit has to be taken during the month of entry – that is, taken during November 2008. Photos taken on an earlier date will be disqualified! And remember, all images submitted here MUST be no more than 500 pixels on their longest side.

1: The photo you submit should be taken during the month of the actual assignment - so for this month's contest, it must be taken during November 2008. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: You're only allowed to submit one image, and you can't change your mind once it's posted!

"Unusual cold flare"

I was take some shots in the 31.Oct to 1.Nov to some Oporto bridges.
When I look further to take this shot, I've retained in mind "what unusual cool cold flare" made by the under bridge's lights to upwards!

note: taken before November’s Assignment post, but on the very early Nov 1th morning 00:28 am, though. since was UTC 23:28 (you decide). the theme was a happy coincidence.

Winter is coming...



I took this picture on a freezing, overcast day with only available light. Luckily the cloudy sky served as a natural softbox and provided me with a quite flattering light. Using the 50mm at its max aperture of f/1.8 created a really nice bokeh. As far as PP is concerned, I went for that desaturated vintage look which adds to the desired cold atmosphere.

Hello.

I'm new to all this although I did once have a half-share in a Brownie 127.

I wanted to try for a few 'moody and atmospheric' black & white shots in the local cemetery - after all how hard can that be?

I soon discovered just how hard it is to compose a half-decent shot.

I'm on a very steep learning curve here and I have no illusions about how much work lies ahead.

Anyway, since I've spent an hour or so faffing about with it, here's the best of a fairly bad bunch,

Minor cropping only. I clipped off part of the dates - in another life that would have made me curious to look even closer at the whole.
I desaturated the background in 'Fireworks' then played around with it in Photoshop Elements in order to 'colour up' the white grave in the background.
The colouring on the gravestone in the foreground is unchanged.
