Hi everyone! Welcome to October's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Sunsets", as suggested by Lensbaby who won the August 2012
competition. Be sure to read the whole post for the rules.

I am placing no restrictions on processing. If you feel your submission would be more interesting using HDR toning, by all means, go for it! Please participate, and ask your friends to participate. I'm expecting some completely awesome shots, photographers.

The rules!

1: You can only submit one image and it MUST be taken during October 2012. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: All images submitted must be no more than 1024 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a
full resolution version if you like. Flickr users must link back to the original version to comply with its latest rules.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. Keep it clean and family-friendly or it'll
be removed. See the Forum Rules for guides.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any
particular challenges in doing so like, for example, any special exposure or lighting setup.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also
include the following:

Got up nice and early for this one.

- 1/13 sec @ f/16
- ISO 100
- 95mm on Nikkor18-200mm VR II
- Nikon D80 on a tri-pod
- Adjusted contrast and saturation in Lightroom 4

I also used 'The Photographer's Ephemeris' to plan this shoot; the sun came up exactly where it showed it would. I would've had the moon in the top right of the photo if it weren't for the overcast morning sky. Here's a link: http://photoephemeris.com/

Hope this qualifies, as I suppose there's no direct Sun?

Ok so this is my first public upload of a photo so please be gentle! Can't work out how to do the thumbnail thing which is frustrating, and hope at least this link to flickr works. Apologies if I've inadvertently contravened any rules of upload...!

I got my DSLR about 2 weeks ago so it's all very new to me. As a response to an ealier question on the forum someone suggested uploading photo attempts for feedback, so here goes. I know you're meant to give information on the settings used but I'm not sure how to retrieve that information once the shot is taken so any tips on that welcome. The photo was taken outside my front door yesterday in Norwich, UK with Canon EOS 550d, Canon 50mm lens and I was trying to focus on the beautiful light on the near cars and windows.

Any feedback welcome as I'm keen to learn.

The lack of pollution and excellent air quality up here in the Frozen North of Scotland makes for fantastic skies ..... when it's not grey, grim, bleak and raining buckets! This shot taken from my balcony today, shows our neighbourhood mountains silhouetted against a sky that appears to be aflame.



Pentax K20D 18-55 lens on 45mm ISO1600 1/125 @f.6.7 underexposed by half a stop.

Stayed with the original sunset theme despite seeing some wonderful sunrises this month. I submit this one because I really liked the very unusual straight line at the edge of an otherwise totally broken up cloud formation. Apart from midges there were no huge challenges in getting the pic because I took it from the back garden!

October 19th in the UK brought an unusual cloud formation that for a few minutes was back lit by the setting sun.

Av mode one and a third stops under exposed.

Adjustment brush in Lightroom to bring down the houses and trees a little to make more of a silhouette but with the underexposure in camera it pretty much looked like that.

There is a moment some evenings when the final rays of the sun pass through a gap in the hills and under the cloud cover to briefly wash over the landscape near my home. It usually lasts only a couple of minutes.

just spend a few days up at the Gold Coast " Hi 4xxxx" , this is the Sunset from the hotel window. Shame I couldn`t get a sunset shot over the high rise building.
