NOVEMBER 1ST - Submissions closed, vote for your favorite!

Hi everyone! Welcome to October's Assignment!

The theme for this month is "Black", as suggested by popo who won the August 2010 competition. Be sure to read the whole post for the rules.

In popo's own words:

"After a little thought, the theme I have chosen is... Black. As photography is about the capture of light, the relative lack of it in black makes it a bit more interesting. Please note black doesn't have to be taken too literally. If you look at black things, often they're not perfectly black. That's ok.

I'll leave PP options open, but any significant "black" point of interest should be a natural part of the scene and not a result of PP. This is especially the case if you wish to do a black and white photo."

The rules!

1: You can only submit one image and it MUST be taken during October 2010. Photos taken earlier will be disqualified!

2: All images submitted must be no more than 500 pixels on their longest side, although you can include a link to a full resolution version if you like. Flickr users must link back to the original version to comply with its latest rules.

As always, please exercise good judgement on what is suitable for the forum. Keep it clean and family-friendly or it'll be removed. See the Forum Rules for guides.

Please include a sentence or two with your photo describing what you were trying to achieve and if there were any particular challenges in doing so like, for example, any special exposure or lighting setup.

We're all enthusiasts here, so it's also great to see what equipment you used and the settings too. So please also include the following:

Camera Model:
Lens and focal length:
Aperture:
Shutter Speed:
Sensitivity:
Post processing:

Submissions will close at midnight GMT on 31st October 2010. The final poll will follow.

Please remember this thread is for submissions only. If you'd like to comment on any of the submissions or ask any questions, please do so in the October 2010 Comments and Questions thread!

Thanks and good luck!

- Bjorn -

Hi everyone,
New person here. Was into video but sold my gear to try "stills". Bought a new camera that arrived yesterday and took it and my dog for a walk today. Still trying to get my head around F stops, iso and everything now being in "mm". This was m just playing around with the settings.

B(lack) of light...

Thought the black portion of the photo enhanced the drama in this shot.
The black formed by the shadows from light source overlaping with the black due to lack of light had quite a role to play here.

Hi all,

Image

The Morris Eight(1938) was a small car inspired by the sales popularity of the similarly shaped Ford Model Y. The success of the car enabled Morris to regain its position as Britain's largest motor manufacturer.

BTW, can I change my entry or add a new entry before the end of October? I have to get a roll of film developed and I think that I may have some nice shots...

Thanks!
