I want to add a wideangle lens for use on the 6D. My first and the most obvious choice is the Canon 17-40L f4 lens.

I have dismissed the 16-35 f 2.8 purely on price, I don`t think I need the aperture for Landscape photography and the extra bit of corner sharpness it may have, just isn`t worth it for me.

But I am happy to look at others like Sigma, Tamron and Tokina. Any thoughts ?

The 17-40 is an awesome lens. Very good image quality and if you don't need the 2.8 then I would definitely recommend it! I have been very happy with it on my 40D + 7D and can't wait to get it on a 5D Mark II(I)! I always prefer Canon over any other brand, purely because I know 100% that it will work perfectly with every new DSLR-camera they will throw at us.

If you don't mind a prime the Samyang 14mm springs to mind, but it does have a comical amount of distortion.

A potential budget prime is a Tokina 17mm 3.5, which was made in manual focus and in two generations of auto-focusing lenses. Production ceased fairly recently. I had a Nikon-fit AF version, which I now regret sellng, and still have a Vivitar-branded, but Tokina-made, Nikon-fit manual-focus sample. Not the greatest optics, perhaps, but quite good for the price.

Really, however, the EF 17-40mm is on my short list, as it seems highly favored by local shooters I know. It seems that some internet pixel-peepers fault it, but real, live, breathing local folks like it. One main thing that has kept me from spending my money on the 17-40L is that my EF-S 10-22mm is really quite excellent on a 7D.

If you want extreme wide angle, you should look at the Sigma 12-24mm
I myself have a 17-40L and it's excellent. I'm very happy with it

I really love the Sigma 12-24mm for its extreme wide angle. Some shots I took with that lens can be found in those threads:

That angle is just impressive and a lot of fun.

I have been contemplating the Sigma 12-24mm II. Sigma's specs indicate it is "splash-resistant," which would be a sensible match for my weather-sealed 7D and 1D Mark II N cameras; this Sigma probably being the widest non-fisheye option available for the latter.

Thanks everyone, I think I will get the 17-40L.
General size, weight will make it a great addition to the rest of my lenses. I am enjoying the Tamron 24-70 on both the 6D and 7D for indoor, portrait and generally chasing the kids around, but its big big heavy thing. The 17-40 is going to be a nice general walk around lens and for outdoor Landscape photography.

I have got two 6-8 week holidays planned with the family and caravan cruising around Australia, one September-October and then March-April next year, it will be a great time to put it to use.

I can see that the Sigma 12-24 would be a great wide angle option, but its bigger size weight and shorter zoom makes it a bit too specialized for my needs.
