Hi folks,

They may produce the best search engine in town (but we used to say that about Alta Vista so things can change) but Google has too many fingers in too many pies for my liking. Now they are about to update their privacy policy (UK version) and U.S. lawmakers are apparently investigating the new terms (source).

On first glance Google say they are doing a good thing but on their FAQs (UK version) they offer in response to the question "What should I expect to see change as a result of this?" the answer that "Over time, you can expect to see better search results, ads and other content when you’re using Google services". Read the full FAQs for a complete picture but to me that's as good as Google admitting that it will be using the data it collects on you from its various separate component entities and sharing that data amongst those entities. Or have I got it wrong?

all that data that is collected does make me suspicious, I recently heard about super cookies and after googling that decided to install BetterPrivacy, an add on for firefox.

I think all ad based companies will do what they can to harvest and use info they can get on you. In part due to that I never liked keeping logged into various google services, although it would be trivial for them to tie data to any given IP address anyway. So basically no surprise.

......................Google admits privacy policy email glitch

The story can be read here but to me the bottom line is that Google used email addresses that the owner's weren't even aware Google had access to. So if Google provides the back-end service for your email account (even though you aren't signed up with Google) it seems that not only do they have your email address but it isn't tightly locked away. They used such addresses to send emails of their own which begs the question of what else they might or might not be using such addresses for internally? If it weren't for the "glitch" we would never have known!

No worries. Did google used any personal information you put on the web against you?

Then its time to answer this - why did you put it in in the first place?
I am calm, i still had not found time rto read new policy privacy, but it would be boring stuff anyways, I dont put any personal information online,and if i am asked to, i fake it. I put my name only into trusty service and google is one of them.

It does bother me that they are basically profiling all their users but I'm more concerned about Facebook tbh
