Thanks for the update Antony. I can imagine the set is quite heavy with a large lens on it, and indeed quite large too. Have you thought about getting a smaller and lighter prime lens for those days when you don't want to be lugging around heavy gear?

Yes, that is my room. Got most of the wall covered with picture frames, all with my own work. The one empty spot represents the fact that photography is my current passion: I have to be out taking pictures as much as possible to fill that spot, I have to keep on shooting to expand my body of work.

Now, back on topic, as I recently made some purchases as well:

  • Elliott Erwitt - Personal Best (hardcover) --> Yes, you have just seen me holding the paperback version, which was my second copy of Personal Best. I initially ordered the Collector's Edition, but the retailer found out after 3 weeks or so that they never had it in stock to begin with. So I hunted down a hardcover copy (quite rare and not cheap either) for my growing collection.
  • Speaking of growing collections, I had to get a second bookcase for my Erwitt books (excuse the terrible picture):

    Image
  • Bruce Gilden's Stern Portfolio --> Sells for around 40 GBP on Amazon and I found a great copy at Rotterdam's photography museum for €16. Good deal!
  • Robert Frank - Back White and Things --> Bought for €20 instead of $90 on Amazon. Another deal I couldn't resist.
  • Had my own London photo book printed, with pictures from 2010 through 2013.
  • Joel Meyerowitz - Taking My Time (limited edition) --> Early birthday present for myself, comes with a signed print and contains two volumes as a complete retrospective of the work of Meyerowitz. Keeping the set wrapped in its plastic till my birthday, but so far it looks like another awesome addition to my photo book collection.

I have the Sony FE 35mm F2.8 prime. Just I always feel lack of something with Prime. (I know I am not professional.)
Instead of getting something lighter, I bought a new camera bag with wheels - Lowepro Roller Attaché x50.

Not that I carry a lot of lenses (hardly any additional lenses actually) I do carry 1 or 2 flashes all the time. Since I am getting older, I need to look after my shoulders.

(BTW, that was the first photo I took with FE 24-70 F4 lens.)

A new trekking bike as my "old new one" was stolen last year. That was pretty damn awful... But in the end the new new one is better - I love it:

(This time I have a bike lock that's safe. Close to the best thing there is.)

...against my old old bike, which survived several thousand kilometers with me. But in the end it's just old and not really fun to use:

And it was two classes worse from the start.

Congratulations, Jiko! :)

I just acquired a pre-owned Nikon D700! It had notable external wear, but it was concentrated in just one place, near the left strap lug, and a shutter count in the 58K range, so the asking price was reasonable. Now, finally, I have an FX digital companion for my 35mm Nikon film SLRs. :)

Hi folks,

DxO Labs (link) have a sale on for their suites at the moment so I thought I'd download the Optics Pro RAW converter free trial and give it a try. A big mistake as I fell in love with it!

The sale, which I assume is world-wide, ends on March 31st so you still have time to give the software a try. I'll still use ACR for my astrophotography work as an intermediate step between PixInsight and PhotoShop but for regular photography ACR is no longer of any use to me!

Bob.

I wish I had one in order to get the reach I'm used of the 100-400mm on the 500D when I'm using the 5D3, which can focus up to F8 with the new firmware. Without a tele converter I dont need to install the new firmware...

In the end of February: One of the "small" Big Whites - the 300/2.8L IS
In the end of March: Extender 2x II

When I get the chance I will point the 100-400L + 1.4x + 2x @ 1120mm towards the moon just for the heck of it!

A Nikon AF-S VR 24-120 F4G ED as a holiday/walkabout lens.
I previously liked the range of the 16-85mm on DX.

Just gave in and got myself down on the waiting list for the new Sigma 50mm f/1.4. Heard I'll be on the 2nd wave of deliveries in a few weeks.

Congratulations to janern, oldCarlos, and popo! :-)

This has been an expensive week for me, with the acquisition of an iPhone 5s, and an apparently little-used pre-owned Nikon D700. This is my first "smart" phone, and, yes, my second D700 body. I am trending toward cropped-frame Canons, and FX/35mm Nikons. 12MP is still, at this point, plenty for my needs.

Had the D700 already been sold before I arrived, I might well have traded the same items toward a pre-owned Canon EF 24mm 1.4L II lens.

My Nikon-ization* continues; today, a pre-owned Nikkor 18mm 2.8D lens came home with me. It had been at a local camera shop for several weeks, unloved. A much-read blogger rating this lens as one of Nikon's "ten worst" lenses probably did not help it sell; I dug a little deeper and found that while many disdain this lens, others like it. My first impressions with it are favorable. It behaved well enough inside the building, the AF was very accurate, and I shot a few images outdoors at home as the sun was starting to set.

*I am in little danger of actually divesting myself of my existing Canon equipment.

Edited to add: My reason for shooting near sunset was to try to make ghosts appear. This wide Nikkor lens, thankfully, is not as susceptible to ghosting as I had feared it would be.

I went to the Cameralabs home page, clicked on the "Support Me" page, clicked on the Amazon USA tab, and ordered a Metz 36 AF-5 flashgun for Nikons. I have never seen this particular model, except on-line, but have seen and/or handled the other Metz shoe-mount flashguns, and my wife uses one of the second-from-the-top-tier models with her D7000, as a back-up for her SB-800.

For the times I need far less power than top-tier shoe-mount flash, but want better than the pop-up flash, this Metz should be quite handy. This should be especially true when using an SC-29 cord, and/or when using the compact Nikon A camera. I am hoping the Metz 36 is relatively pocketable; if not, I may try the even smaller Metz 24.

I await the arrival of the package. Monday is a holiday in the USA, so it will not ship until Tuesday.

A 2nd-hand Canon 24-105 lens so I finally have a walk around zoom again.

Also, an inexpensive pair of Sony MDR-V6 headphones I've heard so many great things about.
