A used Canon 2x ii extender. The 1.4x ii was great with my lens, so I decided to get a 2nd-hand 2x model. Fingers crossed.

Update: Not that spectacular. It resolves maybe a tiny bit more detail than a 1.4x. If I down-res to the same res as an image with the 1.4x, it looks worse. If I upres the 1.4x to the 2x's size, it's close. At 100% crop, the 1.4x images are sharper.

I now own the Canon 5D mark II . Upgraded from the 5D now that the mark III has been released. I see myself owning it for a good long while now--perhaps until it dies. Can't wait to test 'er out.

Happy with my early Father's Day gift. :D

Good choice Carlos! Since the D800 has been announced prices of the D700 are very good. You have done the Nikon equivalent of me buying the 5D2 :)

Thanks James. 8) I was actually hoping to get the new D800, especially after reading reviews & followingThomas's threads on it, but with it still being scarce (thankfully) it gave me more time to think realisticaly & tbh it would have been overkill for my needs.
Also my `moneyboss` reckons the £1200 difference can be put to better use. (like a new lens maybe   )

Nebulousity. It offers some interesting pre-processing potential before I feed stuff into PixInsight... excitedly going over old data now to see what this brings!

Nikon D700.

Great catch! I have been looking at the D700- used ones- for some time. The camera is head and shoulders above 95% or more of digital cameras on the market imho. When I first looked past consumer cameras, I was surprised by the low light performance shown in samples and D700 reviews. My wife's P90 is too noisy to use in anything approaching low light. Looking forward to seeing your D700 imagery ; )

Canon EF 40mm 2.8 lens.

The light weight, and lesser torque being applied to my ailing right wrist, should make make walking about with a DSLR notably more comfortable, and the ability to tote this combination inside a smaller bag should mean I have a camera with me more of the time. Most pocket cameras do not impress me, and the compact mirrorless camera I like the most, the Fuji X Pro-1, is out of reasonable financial reach for about another year.
