So the best thing is taking apart the lens first? No moisture problems and you can possibly clean it a bit better. The thing is: Putting it back together might be hard sometimes...

anything in particular to look out for, like springs flipping out etc.
going to have to take an old lens apart one day, I have a very large mounted magnifying glass and a fairly steady hand

In my limited experience, old manual only lenses are relatively simple and not too bad to take apart. Modern AF ones tend to be more complicated.

Tip: work in a clean area so if anything does go ping, you have half a chance of finding it!

That part about a clean area, not so good, got a small lathe & mill/drill in there, lots of tiny metal fillings around.

I was taking apart my old 400mm lens and it was quite easy to do so but it has three glasses inside - no crazy stuff like 17 lenses in 14 groups or so...

I would buy a lens with peanuts....but I guess there are no offers. (or maybe a lens with free peanuts,but that's already crazy talk)
