Just received my monthly photo magazine, looked through and thought about types of photography, there is so many of them. Macro, Landscapes, portraits, sports, Wildlife etc.

If you have let's say 70-200 f/2.8 lens, it can be used for both macro and sports, but for macro it's good to have Ring Flash, Reflectors, extension tubes, macro filters... when doing sports they are all useless.

And then I thought, is it good to concentrate on one or two types of photography?
If you are doing portrait and macro let's say- use your spare time reading tips and practising in those areas, buy accesories and lenses that can be used for that purpose.


I hope you understand what I meant by all this.

Try and do as much as possible while everything still interests you. At some point, you'll find your thing and shoot that more and more, if not exclusively. I've found street photography is what I like to do, haven't shot anything else since.

From what i know, 70-200 will not be a good for macro shots.

Macro is not something that is close, but something that is 1:1 (as big as) with image sensor.
so, if you would shoot a 35mm post stamp with 100mm macro lens and 5dmk2, that would be something which is considered as a macro shot.

I dont know what about other styles, i try to shoot mostly photo reports, which is real variety of them. You got closeups, sport, panning, and god knows what else in one. I dont like to be concentrated on few types of shots.

However, someone might like it, because s/he like to shoot only with 50mm, with which cant be done much (i think). Take for example our noble moderator Bjorn, it seems he shoots only street photography and someting i dont know how is it called in english (arranged books and so)

It might be better for start to do only one or two types, then add more. I really would not like the time when i would miss an awesome photo just because i could not do it properly.

Bjorn, I think i'm over that, when i'm shooting everything everywhere. By now i know what i want to shoot, now just lenses and other accesories left.

Dingo, you said 70-200 f/2.8 isn't good for macro, so what lens would? If I have A580 which lens would be best for macro? I'm thinking about to buy Minolta 50mm f/1.7 MF for portraits and 70-200 f2.8 for pet and sports.

i dont know anything about sony lens, so all i can say is - if that would be canon i would take 100 f2.8L macro

try to look at a enlargement factor, it should be 1:1

also, in digital photocamera magazine (czech equivalent) no. 91, they had macro lens test, and for sony they say the best for sony is tamron sp af 90mm f2.8, so try to hunt few infos about it.

Thanks for that, i was looking at it some time ago, but then i came across 70-200 f2.8 and thought it will be good for both, sports and macro, but unfortunately it isn't. So will have to spend abit more money.

I went for the 100mm 2.8L Macro IS USM - that's 1:1 macro, very good for that and portraits. I went for it instead of the 70-200mm - trading better image quality, macro and lower price for the ability to zoom.
For sports, aviation and wildlife I'm using the EF 100-400mm L IS USM.

I have the 100 2.8L macro too, though I bought it mainly for wedding prep portraits and close ups as my 180 (which I do use for macro) is a bit too long for the often tight spaces....

I looked at Tamron 90mm f/2.8 for macro and outdoor portraits, but for indoor portraits it's too big right? So i thought maybe there is lens which is good for indoor/outdoor portraits and macro, or should I consider 50mm 1.8 for indoor portraits?

Unfortunately you have discovered that there is not one lens for all. 100 is not necessarily too tight for indoors, depends how you use it. Maybe go for a more general zoom lens if you are not sure of what you will.use it for or if yoh want more flexibilty. A.24-70 or 105 are both great lenses to have (look for appropriate focal length for a cropped sensor).

If I buy Tamron 90mm 2.8 for outdoor portraits and macro, Sigma 18-200mm as walk around lens, 50mm 1.8 for indoor low light shots and Tamron 70-200 2.8 for wildlife, pet and indoor concerts?
Or there is alternatives?

i didn't won anything Just wondering, trying to understand which lenses are good for what. At the moment i have kit lens (18-55mm). I want Macro lens and portrait lens(that would be Tamron 90mm 2.8 ) and as i want lens for pet photography, i think Tamron 70-200 2.8(because of dof) would be great for that job, of course, it would be better to get cheaper alternative.
And Sigma 18-200mm would be everyday lens.
