I'm currently watching 3 Nikon D5000's on Ebay. All of them are used but all of them are claimed to be in perfect working order.

Anyone got any thoughts?

Ebay has various buyer protection schemes so do things by the book and you should have cover if things go wrong.

How are the finishing prices looking though? How does that compare with used cameras at dealers?

Its hard to say about finishing prices, all the auctions still have hours to run and as you probably know it can go a bit mad at the last moment.

Do you know any dealers who do secondhand, I had not considered that as an option?

Ebay has a button somewhere that does show recently finished auctions too. That does help get a feel for what to expect, although you never know until its over.

2nd hand dealers are not exactly rare. I could list some UK ones but it does depend on which country you're in.

I've just seen one which says that it is brand new and unused and there is a buy it now price of £449.99, that seems very reasonable.

I'd buy one if the seller allows returns if you are not completely satisfied with the item's condition. However, you'll most likely incur the shipping cost both way.

mpbphotographic specialise in used kit and are my 1st stop when looking. Also T4cameras have random stuff in although used kit is more a side line for them and they mostly do whatever they get in part exchange.

+1 to ffordes although I've only used them once. There are some more I've looked at but haven't tried so wont mention here.

So after all that I put a bid in on a D5000 which I didn't expect to win and what do you know I won. I paid £385 for a second hand one. I think I'm pleased, I'm not sure yet though!

I have bought three cameras through evil-bay. The Canon XTi (400D) and 40D were good, virtually new. The Nikon FM3a, well, I am not sure yet. I had to order a user guide, so I can learn how it works, in order to determine if it is working properly. Tutorials I find on-line all seem to assume I know basic things that I just do not know, as this is my first film SLR. I am still awaiting the user guide.

I've received the camera now and it looks in perfect condition, still had all the little plastic bags and wrapping even. I have tried using it and as far as I can tell it is full working order, mind you there are still about 90% of the features I haven't used.
