I have noticed that there are a lot of "what camera" or "what lens" posts on there. Is that not what the forums are for?

I've also noticed that there are a lot of people out there shooting with Canons. Isnt that what Nikons are for?

Wow that is my first ever Canon-bashing post online, I hope it isnt a downhill slope from here

Guess they find Facebook more convenient. Or maybe they can't be bothered signing up on the forums, who knows...

I do not use Facebook, but do use several forums. I reckon there are those who use Facebook, but not forums.

I read people every day saying "how about (this camera) with (this lens)"?

They appear to be newbies asking whether they should buy a semi pro camera? I am sat there thinking Noooooo.

This will sound biast because I favour primes, but I always seem to notice people asking whether they should get such and such, quoting a lens with a random zoom lengh.

Another common thing is asking "should I buy", and naming several lenses.

You have never touched a DSLR before properly in your life. Why on earth would you want a boat load of lenses all different lenghs?

When you ask "What will you mainly be photographing?", you will often get an answer like "I don't know" or "everything". What is everything?, That does not tell me anything about you, your requirements, your budget, or anything really.

I bet they don't even know about the crop factor. That is Why we have the forums, so that all of this can be discussed, enabling them to make an assisted decision of which models to purchase, and with which lenses etc.

I think by using Facebook, they are missing out on a lot. They have very little information to go on, there are probably less responses, and there is no lens gallery on there either.

Jeremy was right though about what he said. Most nights, someone wants to buy a new DSLR.

What I am trying to figure out though, if they haven't been on here yet, how do they even know about the Facebook page, how do they know it even exists? Are friends of theirs inviting them into it, possibly?

That's the whole point of bookface somebody from the forum who's on there has a friend who likes photography and they have friends who have friends so it'll spread like wildfire as intended so no need ever to find or visit the source. Me personally only use it to keep in touch with people I actually know but I can also see the value to businesses and the like.

right, I have left the page.

Too many
"I have no experience, which expensive camera with 12 lenses shall I buy?"

and "Canon VS Nikon", like we haven't heard enough of it before :D

This is what the forums are for.

Which is why Bjorn and me founded the Cameralabs Hyve (dutch social networking site), and why most of us bought straps.

However, there is a point on (lightly) redirecting people with specific questions to the forums; after all, gordon has ads on the forums, some of which affiliates.

The Facebook page could bring a lot of users in. If you remember my post a while back asking how people discovered Cameralabs (here) the majority of the people came through Youtube. Facebook is just as popular as Youtube (probably even more popular) so it wouldn't be difficult to redirect some traffic from there to the forums to help Cameralabs grow.

Yes, without a Facebook account, you can not even view anything. They are strict.

I could have not bothered viewing the content, but it seems pointless still being on there unless I intend you use it.

We want people on the forum, not Facebook. :D
