Post subject: THE RULE OF 600
PostPosted: Tue May 10, 2011 9:10 pm
Reading on-line, the rule of 600 is for determining the longest exposure that is possible for any given focal length lens, without stars streaking. It also said it is used for 35mm. Can you use it for digital Cameras?

Also, there are CCD Focal Length Calculators on-line but there are inputs that I don't know.Like CCD size, how to put infinity in, "Distance From Lens To Object", Maximum Size Of Target Object, etc...I have a Nikon D5000

Now the D5000 has a CMOS. Can it be calculated?

THE RULE seems to be a quick way to calculate exposure, if one knows what to do.....

As a rough indicator, I'd take it to require the need to factor in crop factor. So use the 35mm format equivalent when applying the rule. Arguably this impacted by pixel size regardless of format size, but calculating that is probably overkill.

I'll clip and paste there formula....600 / (Focal Length) = Maximum Exposure Time. So, for example, if you're shooting with a 24mm lens the math would be: 600/24mm = 25 seconds. (For medium format it's roughly half this number). That's from...
