Almost all of us here don't make money professionally from photography (as far as I can tell).
So does anyone of us need a pro dslr?, no. Do I need one, No.
But I wanted one, and I can afford one and It's my hobby, so I bought one.

Ask the same question on other subjects and you see that "needing" something isn't the question.
If you only but things you need then why do we own dslr's ore even a camera?

Does anyone beside an hell's angel need a Harley Davidson?, no.
But there are quite a few people that are not hell's angels that own a Harley and are very happy with it.

Do like Slingshot said. He gave very good advise. Most of the thing I buy, I bought the same way he bought his boat.

Good decision. Unless you plan to earn money from that D700, or are earning a regular salary and have no other expenses, it can be a hard buy to stomach.

Agreed Logic. I too am waiting another 2 years to move to FX. :D Hopefully the D700 replacement or even the D4 will be out by then.

Good Luck on your future purchase.

Its human nature to get the best, it dose not matter if you're making money from it or not, but one day you'll have it.

i don't see why you shouldn't get the d700. it's expensive and probably not worth it if you don't want to pay the bills with it, but money doesn't seem to be a problem for you so go get it!
