Gordon's suggestions are similar to what we use in the photography forum of my own website. We allow images to be hosted anywhere, its up to the entrant. We also limit the size of the photo posted on the forum but allow people to link to another page showing the full size image. This is easy to do, all you have to do is wrap a url code around an image code like this:

[ url = http ://...... ] [ img ] photo url [ /img ] [ /url ]

I'd like to suggest this post, that explains how to link pictures, be moved or copied to the new forum.

Maybe we could keep the rules as simple and as few as possible. This is, after all, just for fun and sharing experiences.

One photo per person, about 500 or 600 on the widest margin, use only the editing you could also do within your camera, use any gear that you have. Write down basic technical information: camera, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO.

Maybe the description (explanation) of what the author had in mind should not be posted until the deadline, to allow the public to make up its own interpretations.

Luis, you're right about keeping it simple, and I certainly don't want to wade in and say this is how it should be done. All I really wanted to do was have two separate threads for each assignment, allowing one to show the entires alone without comment for ease of viewing and judging.

As for the captions, that's up to the person submitting them, but I think as camera enthusiasts we'd all like to know the basic settings, and also the creative drive behind it. But if someone prefers not to do this, or doesn't have time, that's no problem.

Once the book assignment is over I'll set up a new sub-forum for On Assignment with a sticky post basically going over what we've discussed here.

We should also have some rules on the tags and the description for the original photos. Are we set on the tags already?
As a desription there should be a link to the assignment thread, so that someone stumbling at flickr (e.g.) over the entry can find his/her way to the competition (see here).

Yep.

Tags should include but not be limited to:

Camera, Labs, Assignment, "Camera Labs" "Camera Labs Assignment" "Camera Labs on Assignment"

I'd suggest a stricter selection: "CameraLabs" plus "assignment" plus the title of the assignment like "books" as three seperate tags. That's unambiguous and easy to search for e.g. on flickr.

The reason I suggested all those combinations so its higher up in the rankings because it contains more than 1 match for the tags, kind of like SEO because when searching it tries to match it with tags, and if your photo has 3 tags that match and yours only has 2, then mine should rank higher if we are on equal views, and I should still rank higher if you had some more views (obviously not 1 view vs 1000 views....)

If tags are a requirement would that mean that we are required to use Flickr to host the photos?

No. Not necessarily! I just mean: If you have a host that alows for tagging use those tags.

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't have a Flickr account now but if it is a requirement I can always create one, no problems. For the moment I'll just stick to imageshack.

A link pointing to cameralabs would be nice, if the site where the photo is hosted allows for text to be added to it.

However, I feel the requirement should be only that the photo can be shown (i.e. can be seen) in the thread. The choice of where to host it should be left to the participant.

As for the technical details of the photo, you could probably get them by downloading the file and examining the meta-data. But it would be simpler if that data was simply typed by the participant.

In any case, the book assignment is now over, so let's see the new forum! :)

Luis i must say I disagree on that one.

People could host images anywhere, and when people go to look back it could just end up a bunch of dead links - now a multi million pound company like Yahoo, ain't just going to go out of business and shut up shop, so thats why we suggested flickr, also in the flickr description, links can be made to cameralabs.

I say Flickr, its big, its reliable, its here to stay + tags + it is the largest (or one of the) PHOTO sharing site(s) on the internet.

A lot of beginners or even advanced armatures, might not be as savvy with computers, and my not know how to recover such data, and also, what if a Film camera is used, there is no data there!

May I suggest a rest for a week, till the new section is up and going? Next Assignment starting this coming Saturday?

Absolutely right. As long as the image can be displayed in the thread what does the rest matter. If the image is hosted on a site that isn't reliable and isn't seen it doesn't get voted on. No big deal!
