In the Netherlands (and probably Belgium also) we had a crime wave of Nigerian scammers a few months/1year ago.

No offence to Africa, but I will never sell anything to someone living on that continent.
Basically I stick to Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, great Britain, for my garage sails.
And I only ship when payment is received, but most people are from the Netherlands and pick up the goods they want to but to make sure I'm not a scammer aether

I have had the same problem when selling items on ebay. I sold my old ps3, an iphone 3g and a psp. All where scammed by someone in Nigeria. My favourite one was someone claiming to be a UK Christian aid worker working in Nigeria who wanted to buy a ps3 for the locals. :D

I am moving apartment so taking the opportunity to clear out some things. I am selling some bits on ebay. For the large, expensive items I only allow cash on collection (mountain bike, laptop etc), for the smaller I allow paypal with insured delivery (small olympus kit lenses I never use). First time I have sold anything since 2006! Hopefully all goes well.

When I use eBay, I only ship to Canada and the States. It does unfortunately prevent some trustful people overseas from buying, but I don't want to get caught up in the shipping and possible scams.

About having a buy/sell on this forum.

Some forums have done this fairly elegantly. For example, minimum amount of posts and a rule that a paper note in every picture with date and forum nick written on.
I haven't heard of any scams in that forum.

I hate to see the degree of xenophobia manifested in this thread. I suggest that if America didn't have a goodly share of crooks itself, it wouldn't have the world's highest rate of incarceration. There are good and bad people everywhere. By all means take sensible measures to protect yourself when trading (most obviously, get the money first), but to refuse to deal with the rest of the world just reinforces all the prejudices that makes people wonder why they aren't seen as the good guys they like to think they are.

The problem is, in my opinion pay pal. I do not trust them to resolve any dispute in the seller's favour. That is the reason i recently sold several items on eBay with cash on collection only. For a couple of smaller items I allowed pay pal, which fingers crossed will be ok as they have paid and I have sent via insured delivery(Europe for both). i do not see the point of expanding that area considering the size of the market in Europe. I see no gain in doing so. That is not xenophobic, it is practical and logical.

I still have one item left, the most expensive to be collected on Thursday. For sure i could still be scammed, it is a lot of money, which could be fake or perhaps the guy could ask to give the bike a test ride etc, which i will of course refuse..... Fingers crossed all will go well.

My only experiences of someone trying to rip me off are of Nigerian origin asking me to post to Nigeria. The last such attempt, several years ago now, asked me to post the item to a nephew on holiday in Nigeria.... Likely story.
