Since we all like gadgets here I thought you might be interested in my new mobile phone. It's a T-Mobile MDA Vario III which is a rebadged version of the HTC Kaiser:

The phone features the following:

- 2.8" QVGA touch screen (240x320)
- Windows Mobile 6 Professional
- full QWERTY keyboard
- Quad band GSM
- Tri band 3G
- CSD, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA data types supported
- microSD/microSDHC card slot
- 20 channel NMEA 0183 integrated GPS
- 3.1Mp main camera, 640x480 video call camera

I've long been a fan of Windows Mobile having had 2 Windows Smartphones and one Windows Mobile 5 PDA before this new PDA. This new phone really is fantastic especially with 3G and HSPDA data on an unlimited data contract. It makes surfing the net on a phone a pleasure.

It's also great that the PDA has built-in GPS. I've bought TomTom for it and can happily use it to navigate anywhere in Western Europe. With a 6Gb microSDHC card in it I can have the maps installed and still have ~5Gb for music and photos. The only downside to the phone is the camera which isn't great. I certainly think it's better than an iPhone especially when you can install any software you like and can use 3G data.

Hi Phil, could you take a photo with it and post it on the site? Mabe with some 100% crops. We all know it won't look pretty, but it's interesting to see where phones are at these days...

Here's a test photo I took this lunchtime on my way to get the latest copy of Autosport. I set white balance to Sunny when taking the photo.

How come the full size image on Flickr isn't 3mp...?

I've seen much worse quality from camera phones, trust me!

Flickr Uploadr resized it. Hold on a sec, I'll sort it out.

Edit: the full 3Mp photo is now online.

I was told about a program called vTap for my phone earlier. It allows you to view YouTub clips and search WikiPedia as well. I thought I'd better try this out and who better than to test it with than one of Gordon's reviews. Here's some screenshots showing the interface. It works really well.

Sweet!

The main problems with PDA's and Smart Phones is the lack of processing power. What I'd really need it a UMPC, but they are still all above £700, with 800Mhz cpu's! Intel has a Core Solo (Based on Core, Core 2 Duo, but with one core) ones at 1.4Ghz which when teamed with a NAND flash hard drive, they seem to work pretty darn fast. But again, I have as much chance of getting that as I do every one of the 60+ Canon EF lenses! (which is 0%, until I win the lottery!)

100% crop isn't that bad, obviously there is noise but think of the size of that tiny sensor, its a miricle the image is even there, does it have a constant aperture and focus or is it one of these new fancy auto focus macro aperture setting ones? (like the n95!)

As far as phone cameras go, i've used the Nokia N95, and it is a really good camera for a phone, best I've seen so far anyway.

Hi Phil, that's pretty neat! Do the youtube clips look good? Is the motion smooth, and is it hammering your mobile bandwidth?
