Why can you see noise clearer on an out of focus part of a photograph than an in focus part ?

Easy, Bart: It's because the out-of-focus areas are smoother / less structured so you can see the noise better!
You still a little disappointed with the noise of your new gear?

Well, that 50mm f1.4 sure can produce out-of-focus effects!

Yeah, al little but on every picture I take I find myself zooming in to 2:1. I guess I have to stop pixel peeping and focus more on the entire photograph.

Yeah, pixel-peeping is the malady of the times :roll:
What monitor are you looking at when evaluating your photos?
Mine is 21" 1600x1200 and that is filled up by the entire pic at 50%, the size being equivalent (roughly) to a DIN A3 print. So looking at photos at 100% is already borderline :wink:

19" is still larger than DIN A4, so when you look at a pic at 100% on your monitor it's approx 3x enlarged.
So try evaluating the noise at 33%. I think that's a much more realistic magnification.
