Camera Labs

Now call me silly, but has no camera company ever thought of making one format, calling it .RAW and giving every bit of sensor detail with 0 compression and with all the metadata?

Anyway, I have portable photoshop 7 on my usb stick, and it won't open Canon's RAW format .CR2, so I am downloading the CS3 trial just now (for my laptop, I have it on my pc already) to see if it will open it.

Just wondering however, is there any open source software that will allow you to open .CR2 files and edit them in RAW format?


P.S.

On my 350D when I set to RAW + L it just gives me two large JPG's rather than a RAW file and a JPG, but if I set it just to RAW it gives me the .CR2 file. - Can anyone help there aswell?

I think I have read elsewhere that one company did exactly that. The format was DNG and the company was called Adobe. Now, I wonder why the camera manufacturers didn't want to climb in bed with Adobe?

Well, those Adobe-remarks aside, Micro$oft is currently trying to jump ship with their new high-dynamic picture format that is built into Vista.
I'd like to see that at least one company can muscle the camera-manufacturers to convert to a single standard format.

As for JPG, it is seriously gash, I seriously want a better file format than that to be the standard, I prefer PNG mon the alpha channels! full 16.7m colours, but you also get the alpha channels that .gif has - Great format for web designs that have lots of colour and detail.

The MS formats I know of are WBMP and HDP.

Bobs right, DNG is the closest you'll get right now to an 'open' RAW format.

As for Canon RAW files, you know you can open and process them in Canon's own Digital Photo Professional software which comes free with its DSLRs? And there's also lots of thrid party RAW converters, some of which are bound to offer free trials. For example, Bibble at
