Post Processing, Uploading, Sharing, and Chatting - like this forum - are a major part of photography now adays.

So, lets all post our workstations =D

My Room - I would go down to the office, but i'm not allowed to have music playing because my uncle watches tv in the office, so i stay in my room =)

I've got 12 hard drives in my computer, I really need to sort them out, because I think i have 5 installations of XP dating back to 2002 LOL! there might be 1 file on a drive i want - plus its fun looking back over old photos you thought you lost, or old convo logs from msn =)

Here's mine taken about a week ago as part of a devart meme.



Photo kit: 3 lenses and a flash unit seen here, along with my blower, lenspen and a stack of filters and adapter rings to the left of keyboard.

My 'big box' computer isn't anything to look at so is hiding under the phone. It is a full tower too. I did have 5 HDs in it at one point but moved some into a file server now leaving only 3. I do need more storage space at the rate I take photos!

I used to have a Mac Mini under the laptop stand to the right of the pic, with another monitor above it. As an ex-owner I can say I glad I'm rid of it. MacOS is, in usability, about 5 years behind linux for my needs. Ubuntu ran quite well on it, but it only became really alive when I stuck XP on it At which point I replaced it with a laptop

I'm currently in the process of doing a "small box" replacement. Spec is largely the same apart from the number of HDs, and full load power consumption is under 50W! But I need to make similar improvements to my file server. I'm also debating doing a "heavy box" replacement, going all out for photo editing performance. Quad core, 8GB of ram will be enough right? I do occasionally hit the limit with 2GB of ram in current system but as 32 bit I can't stick much more in...

^ File Server - Smart Man

We had a rack mount server in the shop one day doing tests on it, wanted one - but it was louder than my hoover =( LOL [btw, my hoover is pretty loud]

1 Reason I can't use a mac for photoshop -the mouse feels like - on the screen, not the actual mouse - it is being dragged along, its not super fast as the PC is.

Tried playing about with the sensitivity, trying different mice but nope - same with the trackpad. BUT use a apple mouse / trackpad on windows...works fine!

Apart from that, I like Macs =) I'd just want a cheap Quad Core one.

Oh, and I also used to run OS X on my PC, but cant ger drivers for my wireless card (ethernet ports in my room arnt working stupid plumber cut them by accident )

Well, it's a bit glorified to call mine a file server. I just has a collection of old hard disks thrown into an old PC. They're not worth the effort reselling (from 250-320GB) and as getting a bit old, they're in raid 1. I use it to dump files I want to keep onto. It's an offline server if that makes sense. It spends 99% of the time off since I don't need continuous access to it. I know I don't have enough case cooling too, so am concerned about long term life running them hot. For longer term I'm considering my options... photos are taking up a lot of disk space esp now I'm starting to shoot raw.

The OS X mouse behaviour is the main thing that kills it for me. The other quirks I could get used to in time, but not that. I like a linear mouse response, available in windows since 3.x if not before, and easily settable in gnome based desktop linux distributions (maybe KDE can do it too, but I can't find it). OS X forces a fairly aggressive two stage profile on the acceleration to the pointer resulting in it going super slowly or fast rather abruptly. The operating system does not let you change that. Various hacks and tweaks are around which brings it close to linear but not quite. And don't bother asking Mac fans for help. The stock answers are: "it's good performance why do you want anything else" or "you'll get used to it".

The only workaround I ever found was to vnc into OS X so the pointer movement will be that of the local computer.

Im thinking about buying a similar case to what I have just now, sticking the 3 x 120mm fans at the front (along with the rest of the fans) and leave it on all the time running server 2003, letting it do a backup of my computer every week, and a backup of my photos every night.

For the Photos, do a weeks worth of backup, then start to over write.

But

Do 2 backups once a week, and keep 1 backup as a show of that week, say Week Startgin 14th September 2008. and say im looking forsomething in my backup thats done every day, and its not there but i roughly know the date, I could go back and look for it.

[if that makes sense to anyone LOL! we do a similar thing at an accountants we do the IT work for, Backup server is restored to the latest backup each week, we backup to a NAS drive and an internal drive along with the TAPE drive - hate tape drive, so bloody slow!

I just looked at how much space my photos are taking up...200GB+ oh dear. So a daily backup might be out of the question LOL

My main computer HD is also in raid 1 so I'm not worried about mechanical failure. My only risk is unwanted deletion. I keep a manual backup on an external hard disk. Probably do it once or twice a month. Just copy the whole lot over. If I were to run another full time file server, then maybe I would automate the backup. I don't think I need the incremental and multi-generational backups systems typically employed on bigger networks :p

I do wonder at times if I'm paranoid enough to consider off site backups...

Edit for your edit: I'm "only" at 75GB and already I'm feeling the strain...

Odd, I feel the exact opposite way! My Razer Copperhead that I ran on the full 2000dpi in Windows I had to lower on my mac but I'm not sure how the sensitivity adjustments in Steermouse correspond to the official Razer drivers.

not just the sensitivity, the reaction and the feel of it looking at it on the screen just isnt the same. Feels more "cinimatic" but the windows one feels more - to the god damn point go get some spreadsheets done -

A couple of months ago, I took one of those "show off your toy" pictures because people usually throw other electronics in their photos - so I figured I'd do it in mine too!



I guess I can add to it now... especially after I get my new lens next week. I have two laptops (one belongs to work) and a desktop (that I hardly use anymore because my work is mobile). I love working at home because I can use my 22" Samsung hooked up to the laptop (I extend it on).
