 Post subject: Lampshade iMac.......
PostPosted: Sun May 18, 2008 12:27 pm
well now...... on my travels I have managed to get a Lampshade 17inch 1.25 iMac with speakers running OS X 10.3.9 in good condition for the total cost of a case of beer and take it away....... it was a genuine sale as it belonged to a clients son who just wanted to have it go to a good home.......

I have cleaned up the files on the hard drive, added a stick of 512ram which I had, that fitted, updated the files, and now running my music files, which are on a external hard drive with a link to itunes along with JBL desk top speakers.

Tomorrow I am going to find out the cost of an airport card and a upgrade with the OS to OS X 10.4.11. With the research I have done, this computer will run quite happy with this upgrade....... then photoshop, then then..... great having new toys.....

Sounds great! I'm getting my Macbook Pro tomorrow and hopefully it'll run as well as your iMac is even when it reaches that age.

If you don't mind me asking, why not upgrade to Leopard?

Macbook Pro, very nice...... Leopard, from my research, can make the fans a bit noisy...... but will make some more inquiries

fans noisy when....max out the ram and this will not happen

the reason fans come on is people running processor hungry programs like photoshop with say 1-2 GB of ram, and when the ram is full the processor works harder causing the fans to come on and cool them down.

solution more ram..

if its that old then possibly open it up and clean out the heat sink and fans of the years of gunk that the system has sooked in, giving the system better air intake and needing less use of the fans.

Congratz on a great purchase!

I'm a Windows user since day 1 or should I say, after being through DOS in different variations..lol.

Never really tried a Mac and if I swore off computer gaming as a hobby, I might switch to Apple simple to reduce the amount of time I spend fixing and cleaning up.

Vista - which I was stupid enough to install on my wife's new PC (D'oh!) is pure hell..lol. Have XP myself.

Anyway, sorry for the tangent. A case of beer is definitely a reasonable price for you, the buyer :-)

Cheers!

Its the best switch i have ever done, and that's coming from a windows user since the 3.1 days. You'll love it, and remember it has bootcamp within osx so you can easily run xp/vista if you so wish from the system.

I'm a Windows 3.1 oldie too =D sure i was only 4, but hey, my old 286 was a machine back then =D

then a 386, then 486, then Pentium 90 =D lol.

Windows 3.1 for workgroups - Played Doom - that was enough for me.

We use those iMacs at school for photography. Firstly, they dont open my RAW images, secondly they are slow, thirdly the screens small.

>_< - what makes it worse - there is a Apple mac Dual G5 with a 23" screen sitting right at the other end of the room which is hardly used - its a Teachers Only machine apparently :/

Good luck with it - hopefully its faster than the ones we got to use =)

Bah, as Thomas would say, you youngsters. :P

Coming from the world of CP/M and MS-DOS I can remember being totally blown away by Windows 2. A GUI and task switching - heaven! However, I would like to take this opportunity to deny any rumour that I cut my computational teeth on Charles Babbage's Difference Engine.

Bob.
