Hi all,
Having had a mishap with my usb cable last night, bending it while in it's socket by moving furniture around, today I was looking for a replacement.
Although a small expense in relative terms I just wondered if anyone had
experience in gauging the performance of these cables. I've only used the lead that came with the camera, not really taking any notice before.
Looking at whats on the market prices can vary up to five times, cheapest to dearest.

Not really.

USB carries a digital signal, meaning only zeroes and ones. There's nothing in between, so you have a HUGE margin before errors become apparent. I'm pretty sure the datastream is also error-checked.

You will only notice inferior quality in cable lengths of, say, 4 meters and more. USB needs a repeater after 5 meters (because the lack of shielding and twisted pairs), so a poor cable might start having problems after 4 meters.

But, guessing that your cable isn't longer than 1 meter, I'd say you are 100% fine

It's only a problem if you want to go beyond 3m, as some 5m cables are utter crap and don't work as they're meant to.

I just bought a 5m USB cable for 1,50 euros, and it works well, even with the .5 meter extension my phone cable adds. Stable transfer at 10 MB/s

I've bought two 5m cables, neither worked with my printer... so now I have 3m extension cable and the 1.8m cable that came with my printer and all is well... go figure...

The 5 meter cable doesnt work with my astro webcam, bit angry about that.
Now Ive to set the laptop near the telescope, even when it's freezing outside!

of coure it does.

some of them are cheap chinese garabage, other are perfect even if you connect three or more in series.

for any toys like usb flash drives and devices that dont really need long distace, use any shielded cable (its usually around half centimetre diameter)

for a serious things like usb photocameras, data hard drives, usb sound cards and so on, the best is to use cable with shielding and ferrite beam. (or that is what works for me).

i seriously dont recomend to buy things like found in laptop bags, that can wind itself into cocoon

There should be no problem with using any usb cable as they practically function the same way. It is either make or break with this type of hardware. Some would argue that a gold plated tip would be better but it does not matter as it would when playing on high definition. So you are better of getting something cheap, or a branded one if you want "value" for your money.

long usb cables become a problem, do a google, something about voltage drop and also the delay of the signal.
