If you want it to be free i can recommend some.
1. AVG Anti Virus Download
2.Microsoft Security Essentials (use it myself, you cant download it from the Microsoft website. Don't know why) and since it is a free software i don't see why this is wrong Download
3. Avast Home Edition Download

I can highly recommend the MSE. Fast, protect and remove virus VERY EASY! Just click remove and its done :D

I use a Mac now but when I was using Windows for myself (the family's computer still runs Windows) I would read reviews on each antivirus suite every year and they would all excel in different areas and different company would have the better one every year. I suggest you look some of these reviews and tests up and see which one suits your computer usage best. I've found Norton to be consistently decent but a resource hog, we're using Kaspersky right now and it's not bad but it doesn't impress me.

I have always found Norton to be cumbersome and slow my system down quite a bit.

I use AVG and it works fine in the background.

Victor, I also use Microsoft Security Essentials, very light on resources and gets great reviews.

But you can download from Microsoft, I'd prefer to get it from the makers than a third party download site...

Ah, how odd! Theres probably some dark strategic reason for that but for the life of me I can't think what. Discrimination that is!

EDIT: Just found this on a Windows 7 site regarding MSE. Looks like most of Europe gets it except you...officially!

Q: When will its RTM and be available for me?
A: MSE RTM is scheduled for H2 2009 in 10 languages and in the following 20 markets: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States.
