Post subject: Aperture 2 on iMac
PostPosted: Tue May 19, 2009 11:05 am
Will Aperture 2 work satisfactorily with the "standard" video card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 120) on the 24" iMac (2.93 GHz) or should I upgrade to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 or even the ATI Radeon HD 4850?

Thanks!

Pascal

Well, the 120 GT is practically a rebadged 9500GT, which is a decent card. I wouldn't want to game with it, but I think aperture should work fine with it. I believe photo rendering is more intensive on the CPU than the GPU anyways, in which case your PC is mroe than sufficient.

Aperture relies on Core Image to perform any edits on photos. That means that these operations are going to be accelerated by the GPU so having a decent GPU helps loads. The iMac's GeForce is a decent video card and will help in this regard.

A graphic card upgrade will definitely help you but eventhough Aperture is GPU accelerated it doesn't rely too much on it so the GT120 will work fine. OSX 10.5's (Leopard) replacement, Snow Leopard, will support OpenCL so having a better GPU should help in other areas if you do plan to upgrade to OSX 10.6.

Thanks a lot people! It's good to hear that the 120 will do the job. I'm not a heavy post-processor anyway, so I guess I will be fine.

Cheers,

Pascal
