Are the contact positions and function in 'mini USB' connectors standardised. There seem to be at least 2 types of 'mini USB' connectors, they are quite similar in external appearance at a quick glance, D shaped. BUT in one type the top and bottom of the 'D' are 'convex' and in the other type the top and bottom of the 'D' are concave. Also are the cables associated with each type of a specified colour.

Canon use the concave type as the connection at the camera whereas Olympus use the convex type.

I may have accidentally plugged a Canon cable into an Olympus camera! However an Olympus cable will not fit into a Canon 'female'.
Thanks

I believe there is only one standard mini-USB connector, but camera manufacturers (and phone makers too) modify it slightly for more contacts for example. They look similar at a distance so you need to be careful. When I used a lot of cables for different devices that looked very similar, I labelled them to make it easier to tell apart.

I use one cable for all my miniUSB to USB devices and haven't experienced any problems with them.

Mini USB ports are fairly standard, but remember many compacts combine the TV output and USB on a single port, and this may be different on different models...
