Hi folks,

I wasn't sure where to put this one (despite being a Moderator and thus all knowing ) but I guess it may be of most use to those who have a financial interest in protecting their work, namely "Pros".

According to this PC Pro article there is now a search engine out there, called TinEye, which allows you to submit an image and ask it to find all instances of that image on the Net.

I haven't tried it (I doubt if many people are ripping off my work) so if anyone has used it in anger I'm sure we'd all love to hear how effective it is, even given it is currently still in Beta.

Update: I've installed TinEye as a Firefox add-on and it seems to work just as advertised when fed with, say, some CD cover art. As for my own work, it doesn't appear as though I'll be instigating any lawsuits just yet. Don't know whether to feel offended, relieved or dissatisfied with TinEye's current 701 million image database.

Read about this new search engine on a Dutch site already. Indeed useful for protecting the use of your own images! Otherwise, I don't think it's extremely useful. You'll always get the same or at least very similar images, not alternative ones that might be better.

That's entirely the point. TinEye is specifically designed not to return results other than the search images. If it did it wouldn't be fulfilling its purpose.

What does TinEye do?

TinEye does for images what Google does for text.

Just as you are familiar with entering text in Google to find web pages that contain that text, using TinEye, you enter an image to find pages where that particular image (and modified versions of it) appears.

...so, has anyone tried this out thoroughly yet? any feedback?
