...but how does one go about becoming an assistant(wedding photography)? I figure it would help me if I was under the wing of a professional so I can learn some tips/tricks first hand. Kind of like being mentored

Sorry if this is too broad

In the photography business, it's all about networking and selling yourself to fellow clients/photographers. Have some business cards, make small talk and conversation, get to know people. You'd be surprised how many of them think of you first when they think of photography.

the only thing i can suggest is to start talking to people and get yourself out there.

I've got a wedding next year, (best friends one) and colleges from work said they want family portraits doing, which is a bind as i only have 18-55mm lens and cant afford another yet :(

Just let people know you want the do it some who knows someone might be able to give u some work.
