If I had a business, and had some name in the local community, I wouldn't do an assignment like this. It might lead to potential customers looking at other photographers because they've seen one bad album.

So for me there'd be two options:
- ask full price and offer a good album.
- don't do it.

That's just my 2 cents though...

That's my big concern! I'm thinking I'll do it because it will b good word of mouth advertising but like you say it could have the opposite effect. I had considered giving them a disk and letting them arrange their own album but then that is not the route I want to go down either.

I've learned my lesson. I shall be putting a clear pricing structure on my site now!

So your advice is do it? I guess even if a don't make much from it, it's better than no job at all so I could do them a nice album still meaning my profit will be less but customer would be happy. Then i face the problem of people wanting my services so cheap?

Ohhhh I don't know!

Only submit work you can be proud of...If you aren't satisfied chances are your clients won't be either.

there is two way to go,

either low cost leader = acceptable products, low cost oriented, high volume work.

or be a differentiator = high quality products, unique but more expensive, lower volume work.

either one will works, avoid stuck in the middle where the products are average (tons of photographers stuck in the middle) they are not cheap enough but not quality/unique enough to be considered as differentiator.
