This will be my first review but what a piece of kit to start with!

Bought my Canon 70-200 F/4L from ebay for around £340. The lens is pretty much new, there are no visible marks on it anywhere and both lens elements are totally clean so I think this review will be of the same fairness as reviewing a brand new version of the lens.

Build Quality:

This lens is of course part of Canon's L series range. After picking up this lens for the first time I could easily see why Canon's Professional series of lenses are luxury! The overall casing of the lens feels like a tough but light metal, with a slightly bumpy but otherwise smooth finish. The zoom and focus rings are very smooth, there is no catching and they are both very easy to operate. The focusing on this lens is of course USM and features full time manual focusing.

Optic Quality:

I cannot comment on the main optic quality of the lens as I've not been able to get out to take some photos with it yet. However tomorrow (saturday) I'm off to a local Owl sanctuary where they do flying demonstrations so I will be able to put the lens through its paces there.

Focus Speed:

This lens is branded USM by Canon, this comes as no surprise to a lens of the L series. The USM focusing on this model is very quick and very quiet. The focusing also pick its point and focus very efficiently. My old Sigma 70-300 APO DG had very slow focusing and most of the time couldn't even find anything.

From the quick tests I've done looking out of my window the focusing is brilliant and I think will be a pleasure when shooting wildlife or sports.

The L series lens' all come with the standard Lens hood and carry pouch. Both are very high quality and I'm even surprised of the build quality increase over the Sigma's lens hood.

Overall Performance:

The Canon 70-200 F/4L is no doubt the best lens I've ever handled and I have no doubts it will also be the best lens I have ever used optically. The build quality is excellent and the price point for this lens is practically nothing compared to what you get for your money.

I would totally recommend anyone looking for a good zoom lens to get one of these. It is my first L series lens and I think I've already been bitten by the Canon L bug.

Hope this helps, feel free to ask any questions. I will also get sample shots up as soon as I have them.

Any chance we can see some sample shots. Also what do you think about not having IS, do you find you really need it?
