Serendipitously, a UK based computer magazine with which Gordon is not unconnected ran an article this month about the Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3). The article may become available at the PCW website in due time.

I'll look at working up a review when I have more experience with the site but initial impressions are very favourable. It is easy to sign up and charges are nominal provided you aren't distributing files which are downloaded too often. The biggest downside is that you need third party tools to make uploading files user friendly.

The following image is a small crop from a proof of concept image I took a few nights ago and shows the "double" star Mizar near the bottom of the frame.



The full image (2MB download) is on Amazon's S3 server at http://s3.amazonaws.com/andersson-design/IMG_0266.png. It was taken with a guided EOS 400D and an EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM at f4, at 24mm and with an exposure of 2 minutes with ISO 400. It has been tweaked with Photoshop CS2.

This image raised a number of issues which I have to sort out. Then I hope to produce a series of images with both my EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM and EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM lenses at various focal lengths. If that works out I will use them to review those lenses.

Doing a quick preview of this post has shown that everything worked as expected so I can give Amazon's S3 server a preliminary thumbs up.

As an addendum to my last post, the photo-sharing site SmugMug uses Amazon S3. If you don't want to get down and dirty with the Amazon S3 server then this site is another one to consider as well as those mentioned in previous posts.

On a post in First photos with my Nikon D80 you mentioned having a look at SmuMug. What were your impressions?
