Sometimes it will even work from behind. But off to the side works pretty well for me, about the same as a VCR or TV remote.

Yeah i dont dont mean to bash here or anything, BUT i got a remote a generic one from China, or HK cannot recall. But it works fantastic, and i payed $1 for it. Works great to about 20meters or so, then its kinda tricky to get it to "to work" but i m never further away then 3-4m away from my camera anyways.

When you change the positioning of the camera and press the button once the camera focus, and then once again for it to take the pix.

When you are in bulb mode, press one to focus, one to open the shutter and then press again to close the shutter! Works great, sorry to say that the Nikon version of this remote is WAY overpriced. Not to mention that you do get a battery with that remote, which is more expensive then getting a new battery in Sweden. So from now on, every time i run out of batteries on that remote i will just get a new one.

You can simply reach to the right of your camera and push the button. It will see the IR signal about 90 degrees, maybe a little more. So you don't have to be in front.
