Camera Labs

Hi Craig here,
I'm looking for a digital rangefinder camera, but unfortunately Leica is far out of my price range and I'm not familiar with other rangefinder cameras. Can anyone (namely Gordon) enlighten me? Thanks

Hi Craig, I'm afraid I can't think of any off-hand apart from the Leicas... is there any specific reason you want a rangefinder?

Well Gordon I'd like a rangefinder because I want to go old school, yet at the same time digital. I want a smaller camera than an SLR but better quality than a compact. And of course i like the view finder rather than live view. I've done some research and I've found the Epson R-D1, a 6MP rangerfinder with a Leica lens mount. Sounds promising no?

I think that Epson model is an older, discontinued one, but I may be wrong...

No your not wrong Gordon, it's been discontinued and yup it's 3 years old, but I know where I can find it (amazon) and it's no where near as expensive as any Leica cameras. But I'll keep investigating. Thanks

All i can say is DAMN. I was almost 100% sure they had it in amazon.com for $300 US (body only). Now upon further inspection it's disappeared from amazon and apparently it's currently going for a couple thousand $. It's almost like someone was trying to trick me. Sorry for the completely pointless post,

But you're right! A FF-rangefinder body with either a decent built-in lens or even a lens-mount could be attractiv to people who like perfect quality but don't need too many features...

Well you could also go the Panasonic DMC-L1 route, similar to Leica but a bit cheaper. With optical viewfinder plus life-view.
