Hello. I was wondering if anyone thinks it would be worth upgrading from the Canon S3 to the new S5 that's coming soon. I can't seem to find much improvement other than the screen size and resolution. Too bad they still don't offer wide-screen in movie mode. :(
I was also thinking about the Panasonic FZ-8, but I'm pretty sure you can't zoom while capturing movies. I use that feature a lot on my S3.
Could I use Digital zoom while in movie mode on the Panasonic?
Thanks for your help.

Hi MrcHaZ'85, welcome to the Cameralabs forums!

The differences between the S3 IS and S5 IS seem fairly subtle. You get 2 extra megapixels (but on a sensor the same size which doesn't bode well for noise), you get a 2.5in screen with double the resolution, and you get a flash hotshoe. I believe the optics remain the same.

So probably not worth upgrading, unless you love the S3 IS but wished it could handle an external flashgun.

As for the FZ8, nope, you can't optically zoom during movies. I'm not sure about digitally zooming, but it wouldn't look great anyway. If optically zooming during movies is something you use a lot, best stick with the Canon.

Are there some other aspects of the S3 IS that you don't like? Maybe there's a more suitable model from another manufacturer...

Gordon
