is choosing a SCN manually superior to the auto SCN recognition by a camera? does cam do things differently when the auto SCN recognition is applied?

With the cameras I've used, the auto scene isn't based on recognition by the camera but rather presets on colour/white balance, ISO, etc.

If that's the case with your camera (it'd really help if you told us the brand and model) then there will only be certain situations when auto scene will work as ambient lighting conditions can cause it to give horribly inaccurate colour reproduction. That's the reason why I prefer to do it manually.
