Hi there,

I am after some help choosing my next camera. I currently own the D3100, which I like but am after an upgrade. I would like to start by saying I don't actually need a new camera, I have not outgrown the D3100, but I am ready for a change. I would also like to get more into video, however I am not a big fan of the video mode on the D3100.

I have been considering a number of options:

Canon 60D

Sony A65

Sony NEX-5N

If I bought the Canon or the Sony, I would buy them body only and use Sigma glass, as I am not a fan of their own lenses. I like the compactness and design of the NEX-5N. How does the image and video quality of that stand up to that of the Canon and Sony?

You will probably ask what I like to shoot. At the moment however, I have not specialised in one area of photography/videography.

I will not be purchasing for a few months, as I am about to buy my first Mac, the Mac Mini, so will have to save up for a bit.

Thanks very much for your help.

If you haven't outgrown your present set up, keep it (& invest in better glass when/if you decide to continue)
Why not buy a small dedicated video cam? Probably work out far less expensive too.

I don't want to invest in glass in a system that I may not keep for much longer, if you understand where I'm coming from. Also, I love DSLR video, for example the depth of field, and the quality, so would not want a cheap dedicated video camera.

Given your emphasis on video, any reason the GH2 isn't your list?

And FYI:

Note that Steve Huff said:

It wasn’t that hot, a typical 85 degree (Fahrenheit) night in the summer.

Obviously in say, Arizona, it could get way hotter, but 85° F (= 29.44° C) is still pretty warm :). Because you're using full-time live view, the sensor is continuously "on".
