NZ$ = $0.72 US. So you have $1440 US to spend.

I'd check out the new Canon 60D ($1399) with a fairly good kit lens (18 -135mm). Should be in stores by October. Nikon's D90 replacement is also due soon!

Get one in your hands and see which fits better.

...I'm waiting on Gordon's review too. :)

I disagree about the 18-135. In my opinion you'd better pick a 18-55 instead of the 18-135...Nikon's 18-135 is quite a nice lens, but Canon's isn't...

I'm still not sure what camera + lens combo I'll get yet.

Ja/Nee Joris. I look forward to Gordon's review before writing the 18-135 kit lense off. Besides, Aidan can always buy the 60D body for $1100 and spend his remaining $340 on a lense of his choice. 8) (I don't know what the D90's replacement will cost but a D90 with 18-105 kit costs $1150)

Yeah thanks for this, another option!.. ha ha Just read a quick review on DPR on the Canon 60D too. Yeah I want to spend about $2000Nz which converts to about $1450US to play with. Obviously it all depends if I go body only on all the models suggested and then get a nice lens which I would need help with.

These would be my options I guess, with how much I spend on lens...

Nikon D3100
Sony A55
Canon 550D
Canon 60D
Nikon D90

I think the D90 will be the best bang for the bucks(?).
THe 60D is only great if you need it, the D90 is al really good amature camera.

Now that you have scaled down your search head for the nearest camera shop and try them all out.

"Nikon D3100
Sony A55
Canon 550D
Canon 60D
Nikon D90"

You will get a feel real quick on which of the ones are not your cup-a-tea.

Been to a few shops and tried the Canon 550D and Nikon D90. Yet to see a Canon 60D/Sony A55 or Nikon D3100 so can't compare. These cameras are suppose to be out soon but probably end of October I would imagine. I know Nikon and Sony is end of October I have been told, though they are both on our websites now, so interest must be hotting up.

On lenses, do I just go with the standard kit lens kit or trade them in for something else or again wait until I decide on the brand and then ask for advice again.

I see the Sony A55 RRP with twin lense kit is $1995NZ, so falls in my budget. Nikon again should fall under budget.

Just seen the Nikon D3100 with twin lense kit is $1555NZ, very tempting but want to wait on reviews by Gordon first.

Anyone got their hands of any of these models?

Another option now would have to be the Nikon D7000 depending on price...

I wouldn't shop the 550D and the D90 -- two different levels of camera to me.

With the 60D announcement, I expect we should be seeing D50 prices dropping. The 50D is really an excellent camera - and on-par at the very least with the D90, imo.

Just to update everyone on the end result. Funny how I basically got none of my original options. Being delivered any day now with be a

Nikon D7000

Went for body only as my first lens is a Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 OS and looking at either the Tokina 11-16mm or Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 in the next few weeks. This should do me but a nice prime would be nice.

Good luck with it @idan, i'm sure you won't be disappointed. I've had the D7000 for less than 3 weeks & think it's fantastic.....i'm still finding out what all the settings are about though. :D
