After a fairly long ponder, and after starting out considering a super zoom I have settled on a much better camera and am picking up a D80 18-135 kit from Heathrow today before heading out to Sweden on work :D.

My decision really was made when I tried it in the flesh yesterday - this camera felt superb. That coupled with the reviews and Gordon's gentle pursuasion at the end of the D40x review that the D80 is a better choice, made the decision for me.

It's a good deal: £570 for the kit inclusive + £50 cashback from Nikon.

Anyway if I have a chance to use it in Stockholm I'll post any decent results here (assumining anyone is interested  )

Quick question for anyone: how long does it need to charge the battery first time?

Cheers

Ian

A fellow D80+18-135 owner! :D Nikon says that a fully exhausted battery takes 2 1/4 hours to charge although mine took a little longer. I felt the same way as you when I first went to try it, the size felt perfect unlike the D40 and 400d which were too small. I'm sure we'd all like to see your first shots with the camera.

Great news Ian. Looking forward to some photos as I have very fond memories of Stockholm, albeit from 20+ years ago!

Bob.

I wanted to get a D80+18-135 but unfortunately the parents will not spend that much for Christmas and i don't have the money to spend on it either. So instead i will be getting a D40+18-135 which i'm sure i will be perfectly happy with for quite a while and once i have enough i will probably get a d80 body.

Anyway congrats on your purchase I hope you like it and definatly post some photos.

And another Nikonian is born!

Congratulations on your new gear, and share some photos with us, when you get a chance.

the first time you charge the battery, you should give it a 6-8 hour boost charge.

Yeah but the first few shots can be done after a 1h charge...
