The search is over for me. But this might help some new buyers....

I've heard or perhaps read that Canon DSLRs in general are better to use for night and for actions/sports compared to Nikon DSLRs? Is this true?

Bob, Zorro, Gordon L.? what do you guys think?

Gordon will know best as he has the opportunity to play with so many models (cameras!) but personally I doubt it. If Canon were significantly better than Nikon you wouldn't see the pros using Nikon and it wouldn't be worth Nikon's while producing extreme glass such as the AF-S 200mm f/2G ED-IF VR.

You may notice more Canons in the hands of the press but that may be down to Canon's brilliant marketing decision to put most of their L glass in white barrels. Also, bear in mind that if agencies have a say in which cameras their photographers use then, given that both Canons and Nikons can do the job, the decision may be driven by how good a deal they can negotiate.
