I really cant decide between the Nikon D40x and the Sony A100. I have ruled out the canon D400.

me

I am looking for my first DSLR upgrading from a small point and shoot camera. I will be using the camera for personal use shooting all sorts of pictures from close ups, portraits and landscapes. I will be taking it with me in all different situations, indoor, trips and holidays etc.. I will NOT be using a tripod.

For a while after getting the camera i will be sticking with the kit lens that comes with the camera. I have no immediate plans to get any new lenses but i would like to get something like an 18-200mm lens at some point if i ever find it possible.

The big question: If you were me, which one would you get?

Hi tobywuk,

You might want to think about editing your post and adding a third option "The one that feels most comfortable to me". Either camera will satisfy your requirements so the danger with your poll is that the result will tend to favour the model with the most owners and that may not be the camera that you would enjoy using.

I left that option out on purpose as I dont want people to keep telling me that as i already know it. I want each person's straight forward opinion.

A100 has to much noise at high ISO's.

From those 2, its the D40x.

Can I ask why you have totally ruled out the 400D?

As I see it, they go like this.

D40, 350D, D40x, 400D, D80, 40D, D200, D2X, D300, 5D, 1DsIII, D3, 1DIII

Nikon, Canon, Nikon, Canon, Nikon, Canon, Nikon, Nikon, Nikon, Canon, Canon, Nikon, Canon.

So as my little chart shows, the 400D is just above the D40x, besides it gets compared to the D80, not the D40x, and really it holds it own against the D80 most of the time.

I'd have the D40 as I wouldn't give Sony the money.

Perhaps you should look into the 'future' of your glasses needs.
Are you planning to expand your lenses in future ?
If will affect the choice you make for the body.

I voted D40x because I think Nikon is the superior system(for now) if money is not an issue. If it is, the Sony has a more complete package if you are keeping the kit lens.

I think its interesting how you have placed the 1Ds before the 1D. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying what you've said is incorrect but I've always assumed that the 1Ds was positioned above the 1D because of it's higher pricing. I suppose it depends on how much you value megapixels and sensor size over speed.
