I have long since overlooked the true skill in a photography. I never thought it was such a big deal until I befriended a semi-pro. Over the past year I have dreamed of getting myself a DSLR, I'm just torn between the Canon 40D and the Nikon d200.

This purchase will be my first DSLR. I had my eyes set on the Canon 40D for a good while, until I read a comparison between the it and the Nikon d200. I was looking for some educated insight on my dilemma. I know the d300 will be arriving soon, but I do not think I could afford it.

So this brings me to the question, which camera should I purchase, the Canon 40D or the Nikon d200? I will "mainly" be using this for friend portraits, wildlife, landscapes, and action sports.

Thanks for your time and input.

Hello Bad-Blood, and welcome to the Camera Labs forum!
You're not the only one worried about the right choice. Both cameras are certainly capable. Much depends on the selection of lenses. Please give us some hints about your budget and any thoughts you have on lenses.
As we already have a D200 vs 40D-thread running, please continue here.
Thank you!

Both cameras will deliver roughly similar quality, so it boils down to the following:

1: Which feature-set do you prefer? For example, do you value the Live View and slightly faster 6.5fps shooting on the 40D?

2: Which body looks, feels (and even sounds) best in your hands?

3: Do you prefer the lens selection from Canon or Nikon?
