Hi

I am new to this forum, and would like to congratulate gordon on a very informative website, especially for camera Noobs such as me, who want good pictures while possesing bad knowhow.

I saw the Canon lense mfg video, WOW is all I can say.

I just got myself a Mju 760, went on a holiday and was dissapointed with the results in anything but Bright daylight.

There was so much NOISE in the low light outside & indoors in rooms & restaurants) that the images are useless.

The flash too is useless more than 2 meters away.

Is this because the Mju760 is a small compact. ( I had a S7000, which was lost. Bought in 2005, but that camera definately had better image quality in all light levels)

Due to the atrocious noise levels of the Mju 760, I am now considering buying a DSC h9 or S8000fd or SP 550 (560).

But being the 2nd camera, would not like to buy the wrong one again.

I like the 3" tilt screen of the Sony, which is great shooting toddlers at the right angle, also, it takes shots really quick.

Which one would you guys suggest.

Looking at your budget I am wondering if you have considered a DSLR. Gordon has written a feature called Should you buy a DSLR or a Compact? with some good information.

The reason I am suggesting this is that your budget would seem to be enough to buy a Nikon D40 Lens Kit (AF-S DX 18-55mm), a Canon EOS 350D Lens Kit (EF-S 18-55mm) or possibly even a Nikon D40x Lens Kit (AF-S DX 18-55mm) if the budget has a little give in it. There are more DSLR possibilities from other manufacturers as well.

As Gordon explains, the larger sensor in DSLR bodies should cure your noise problems.

Thanks for the recommendation, but I am not right for a DSLR.

I had a Canon SLR (before Digital) and did not use it (had 2 nice lenses too.
Would those lenses fit into the DSLR's ?

i am more into the quick easy stuff. Therefore am planning to go for the ones mentioned before.

In reality, I was quite happy with the S7000 and the noise levels it had in low lights and indoors.

If these cameras will do a similar job, I will be happy.

Its just that the Mju 760 is crap in low light. The TZ3 is also the same.

Yes, provided they are EF lenses. These were introduced with the original EOS film cameras. Prior to that were the FD mount lenses and they won't fit.

I had a very brief look at your possible cameras before my last post and thought that if you were considering super-zooms then maybe a DSLR wouldn't be too big or heavy. Already having a couple of EF lenses, the EOS 350D might have been a serious contender at your budget but if you don't want a DSLR then I believe you have to accept that you are going to suffer from some picture noise in dim lighting.

I will pass up the offer to recommend a camera from your list in favour of those who know the cameras concerned. By the way, not my place to say it but "welcome to the Camera Labs forums".

Hi sting1, I have to agree with Bob. All non-DSLRs suffer under low light, so if it's bothering you, then a DSLR is the only way to go.

They can be very quick and easy to sue to - just put them on fully automnatic and they'll do everything for you. Some models like the Canon XTi / 400D, Nikon D40 / D40x and Olympus E-410 and E-510 are also realtively compact.

It's all a compromise somewhere though, but if you want good performance in low light and quick response, then go for a DSLR...

Thats great Gordon. They said they are releasing it in oz any day now.
