Are you running an archiving system as well as a backup system. Backup should just be for all files you have accessed recently (probably the last six months) everything else does not require instant access and should be archived.

Think of data storage the same way as paper storage, what would you do when a filing cabinet was full up? You either have to empty some files (archive) or buy another filing cabinet.

With the more recent operating systems you get some nice automated backup solutions. Time Machine on the Mac OS will allow you to recover files that have been accidentally deleted or restore them to previous versions but how far back you can go depends on the size of your Time Machine backup disk compared to the size of you live data disk.

I think some if not all external hdds come with some form of backup/duplication software, which could otherwise be purchased, I would have thought.

Other options consist of :
- Online backup
- CD/DVD
- Flash Drives / Memory Cards
- Paper Copies / Negative (still something to scan)


Something that I would also be interested to know is how you archive your images for professional use, do you have a folder in the clients name, or the year, or what? (There are many ways of course)

Damn I gotta start doing this. I'm thinking of getting a 1tb hdd. But how long do you think this will last me(I'm talking about hardware life not size)? 5 years? 10 years?

This is the joy and bane of digital photography. You get instant results but you don't get the memories that can be made from film prints(Printing out pictures is such a pain in the butt).

I keep 5 copies...

1) My desktop replacement at home.

2) an external hard drive connected to the above

3) My notebook which goes with me almost everywhere

4) A lacie hard drive which is always in my camera case which is always at my side.

5) On a computer in one of my offices.

That is a very difficult question to answer, but I have had mine for 18 months now, and have had no problems so far as yet.

I would say that it will probably last as long as a desktop PC. So, you should get at least a few years out of it, if not 10 years.

They aren't a particularly expensive item at the moment in comparison to most other crucial accessories, and in the future, they should be even cheaper (if not a larger capacity for the same money).

I would reccomend using a powered HDD (3.5") though, these are much faster and increased reliability than the USB driven (2.5") ones. I have both.
