Camera Labs

ive been looking around for assessories for my camera which i havnt even bought yet but ive noties all the small dslr bags (room for one mounted and one or two spare lenses) are set up so the body is essentially leaning on the lens in the bag. is this a good idea? i thought the weight of the body could ruin the lens.

id most probably end up with a 50D and a 17-85mm lens. which isnt a tiny lens but i dont know i just think its odd.

Works fine for me and I know lots of people that do it. To be honest the lens mount probably gets more stress when you're using the camera, with gravity pulling the lens downwards.

Some bags have netting at the bottom to cradle the camera so that it's as supported as possible.

Should be fine, you'd think the lens mount would be one of the toughest areas on the camera.

You'll notice that the padding/dividers are designed such that they are supporting the camera body and that if the lens isn't too long (they usually tell you how big a lens you can fit) the lens is suspended freely.

This way, if the camera is dropped the shock is transferred to the camera body and not the lens although you will need to find a bag that fits the size of gear reasonably well for it to work this way.

Yeah that's a good point. Don't try fitting too long of a lens in the bag or it might not work too well when dropped.
