Hi folks,

PALO ALTO, Calif., June 1, 2010 – HP today announced its first 30-inch monitor to display a range of more than 1 billion colors, the HP ZR30w S-IPS LCD Display.

The price, from HP's website, is $1299 but hopefully it will be available for less elsewhere. But for a 30 inch monitor covering virtually the full AdobeRGB color space maybe it is actually good value for its target market.

That's very nice for print work!
Not too exciting if you only shoot jpegs though

Took me a while to adjust to 24 inch, that's big enough (although I'd like higher resolution...)

I've long wondered why display technology is lagging so far behind graphical capability. Things have defaulted to 8-bit per channel for too long, 10 is an improvement but why not 16 bit? Or more? Maybe that'll be the next revolution.

Anyways, it'll be as much use for jpegs as raw. While jpegs nominally store a lower bit depth, you can still scale it in a larger range. raws still need mapping regardless.

Good point!

But while the U.S. price is still $1299 (source) I note that the pre sales tax price here in the U.K. is £1116 (source) which, at today's exchange rate, is $1740. While certain types of monitor attract high import duties it's for sure that those duties don't amount to a whopping 56%. It seems that not only do the HP guys have "superman" eyesight but they also have a contemptuous view about their customers here on this side of the Atlantic.

I had put this monitor on my shortlist against the time I needed to replace my current one but even at the current street price of £1060 before tax the monitor could sport a trillion colours and I still wouldn't be interested. What a U.K. rip off!

Super IPS HP with 1 billion colors....God,I would love to have that.
