[if you want to help without reading all my bumf, tell me the best monitor i can get for under £300!)

Right as you all probably know I love my new computer.

What I don't love so much, is the colour inaccuracy of my screens!!

I have 2 identical 22" Xerox LCD screens (purchased at the same time, and both have i would imagine around the same hours of use give or take a bit because of boot up times)

not 100% on the model number, I'll check that when I get home.

They were bought around 2 years ago - Jan-Feb 2007 if i remember correctly.





BASICALLY - what I want to know is - if colour corrected, will these displays be good for accurate editing, since I'm going to be making some rather large prints (over 20x20) so I want to make SURE i don't have to print them more than once!


I am also in the market for a new display, and an identical one in the future to go with it.

I've had a look around and apparently some stuff called IPS is a big deal for photoediting and accurate colours - some of the Dells seem to have this and also haev over 100% NTSC gamut - bosting over 1 Billion Colours.


Now what do i want:

tilt and height adjustment (height I can do without if need be)
thin bezzel (for multi monitor setups
the ability to purchase a second 4-6months down the line.
1920x1200 or greater reolution. (16:10 ratio ONLY)
Size - 22" would be fine but i imagine 24,26 and 27 will be the norm - Higher pixel density is fine with me, my eye sight is pretty good haha!

It is a Xerox XM3-22WB

Although there seems to be some differences in where you look for a specs - and i still dont know what "type" of screen it is.

The best apparently is IPS

Someone was saying about input lag- i HATE input lag!

It was from 2008 though, so maybe they have fixed it now.


It also has PVA-type panel - I dunno what the differences are between PVA and IPS - but apparently TN is to be avoided at all costs.


I did have a look at that monitor and it was top of my list since it SEEMS to tick all the boxes and looks nice.

I really used to hate dell, but they're not to shabby these days.

1920x1200 and IPS Panel for £300? Good luck with that.

haha yeah I dont think i'll get a IPS panel for that.

Im still trying to figure out if they are worth the extra money over the PVA ones - and also what type of panel my current Xerox's have!

I've got the 20WGX2 which is S-IPS. I paid 400 for a 20" at the time, could have had a 24" of same res for 240. I go the Viewsonic VX2235 which I thought was crap and sent it back for what I have now. With IPS you get deeper blacks, better viewing angles, and more accurate colours.

So for under £400 i can get a IPS panel, just not 1920x1200? I really wanted the higher resolution, since I'm only going to have one screen and all the screen real-estate will count.

Im still looking at the dell one as I really like its design and features.

Really like to try one out to see if all the stuff is as bad as they say it is, maybe they are just being to picky.

Hi Daniel,

If the budget has any give in it then the NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi (review) might be a possibility. Should be available new for about £700. Comparing it with the Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP review makes for interesting reading.

But if you need accurate colour fidelity then it's maybe worth noting that even one of the best monitors in the field, and at a price to match, can benefit from calibrating. So maybe the best move is to make an investment in some calibration hardware first and see if the end result can defer the purchase of a new monitor for a while?

I am still buying calibration hardware.

For my studio, as you may have seen in the thread in off topic - I'll need a display. preferably a bigger one than my 22" with higher reolution so its easier to see.

I'll be calibrating all my screens to match the prints i'll get from loxleys.
