Post subject: GIMP a Good Editor?
PostPosted: Thu Oct 30, 2008 6:08 pm
Hello everyone,

I'm in need of a good RAW conversion program and a photo editor... Many people have recommended to try GIMP. Is it a good editing program?

Also, for the mac users out there, do you know if Iphoto has RAW conversion?

Hi Eric,

I use Gimp as well. OK, PS CS3 or 4 is of course the standardsoftware, but I think that Gimp as freeware is very capable. So try it out!

For the windows-versions:

Further the RAW-converter for it is UFraw:

Kind regards,

GIMP is probably your best bet if you can't get a copy of Photoshop. It's the best editor I know of that's free, that's for sure. It works a lot like photoshop so if you learn GIMP you should be able to jump into photoshop with the right mindset once you get it.

I love the Gimp as well and have used it for years.
Another free editor for windows is Paint.NET It does not have all the scripting and filter function of The Gimp, but definitely can do a lot, and worth checking out.

Don't forget about IrfanView. Although it is primarily a viewer it does ahve some cool editing features. It also has very robust metadata features.

Oh, and then there is XNVIEW, free also, and great for batch resizing.

I personally have found my investment in Adobe's products very worthy.
It is such a great community and very high level software.
