i have bought the d80 kit with basic NEF viewer, but are most photoprocessor software peices able to use the NEF or is it limited to CaptureNX, photoshop etc.
would Serif photoplus 11 work?

Most image editors that can work with raw files can work with nefs.
If you don't have any of those, then why not try Nikon ViewNX (I think it's Picture Project they bundle with Nikon cameras) or something not from Nikon but still free like RawTherapee, UFRaw, RAWHide, etc.?

My copy of CS2 did not support the D80's RAW files but these things are easily fixed with a software update so look out for those if they are not compatible from the beginning. Usually, a file compatibility list is published for software.
